![]() ![]() Kina had already been dropped from the name to de-emphasize its image as a quinine-centered drink, and Lillet came to be colloquially known as Lillet Blanc, to differentiate it from the brand’s red wine-based Lillet Rouge bottling. In 1986, the company’s new owners altered Lillet’s original recipe to reduce the amount of quinine and create a lighter, less bitter, and fruitier version that would suit modern palates. The aromatized wine grew in popularity throughout Europe in the 1920s thanks to a concerted advertising campaign, and soon began to appear in classic cocktails like the Corpse Reviver No. In 1887, in the French town of Pondensac, brothers Paul and Raymond Lillé developed a different product called Kina Lillet, using a proprietary recipe that included fortified wine and quinine. Lillet Blanc as we know it today is a relatively recent innovation. The gently sweet and floral French aperitif is aged in oak barrels for up to one year, and often employed in cocktails for the juicy and aromatic qualities it lends. Its blanc expression is made with a base of wine fermented from Bordeaux grapes (primarily sémillon and sauvignon blanc), then fortified with sugar, fruit, cinchona, and other ingredients. If you give the Vieux Carré a try, it’s almost sure to end up on your short list of cocktails.Whether served with soda water for a lively spritz or mixed into a classic cocktail like the Vesper, Lillet is endlessly versatile. If that bothers you a little, think back to how well the Peychaud’s and Rye went together in your last Sazerac. Experienced mixologists will know that this does not mean equal amounts of the two bitters: the bottle of Peychaud’s in my bar puts out a lot more bitters per dash – several drops more, anyway – than does the Angostura bottle. Vieux Carré recipes generally call for equal amounts of Rye, Cognac, and Vermouth, with half that of the Benedictine and a dash each of Peychaud’s® (what’s a New Orleans cocktail without Peychaud’s?) and Angostura® bitters. A cocktail with six ingredients might seem to be a little contrived to some, but since two of the ingredients are bitters, it may pass muster. ![]() To experience one at the Carousel Bar is said to be quite a treat. The Vieux Carré was invented during the 1930’s in the French Quarter of New Orleans (where the physical Vieux Carré is found) at the Hotel Monteleone by bartender Walter Bergeron. Stores sometimes stock cocktail straws and other supplies in this section. The large grocery chains, and even Target, usually have a cocktail section tucked away down the beverage aisle where you can find some cocktail mixers, which are usually to be avoided, along with specialty items like Ginger Beer, Angostura® Bitters (Target even had bitters during the recent bitters drought), and the two Flower Waters. You never know what you will find there, but these two French Flower Waters are my most unusual find. In case you’re having trouble finding cocktail ingredients in the Salt Lake City area, there is a trick to it: look in the beverage section of the grocery store. These small, three ounce bottles were out of the way, up on the top shelf, but my mixologist’s eye spotted them. A recent shopping trip to Dan’s groceries on Fort Union Boulevard turned up bottles of two rather exotic cocktail ingredients: Orange Flower Water and Rose Flower Water, both made in France. There is one unusual ingredient in this cocktail that, surprisingly, is available in the Salt Lake City area: Orange Flower Water. They’re something that you’ll ESPECIALLY miss during some of the platforming based sequences that’ll see you flying through hazardous obstacle courses whilst trying to use your abilities at the same time, though some neatly placed stamina orbs do even the playing field a little. You can’t use potions in the game either, so there’s no cheating your way through some of the challenges by hitting a fresh dosage of stamina midway through. Of course, you’re in Olympos now so you shouldn’t expect the purple haze and ominous vibes of those vaults, but rather more luminous locales that’ll make you really feel like you’re up there in the clouds.Ī lot of the same puzzling tropes appear again in Immortals: Fenyx Rising – A New God, though some fresh innovations such as magnetism, electric currents, and warping portals do more than enough to test your mettle throughout. As mentioned, puzzling and platforming is very much the crux of Immortals: Fenyx Rising – A New God, with the experience catering itself more for the players who thrived in the Vaults of Tartaros. It just feels like a really nice area to be able to explore whilst the Golden Isle was vibrant, there’s something more delightful about Olympos that brings with it an almost harmonious presence.ĭon’t be fooled into thinking you’re in for an easy ride though, with the challenges of Olympos proving a hell of a lot more difficult than those found in the main game. It’s a lot smaller in scale when compared to the Golden Isle in the main game, but it’s still split between the same four gods and brings with it an emphasis on epic traversal with your wings as you glide through the air. This means you can expect a LOT of clouds, plenty of pretty architecture, and some striking godly sights that span over you… it’s impressive. Immortals: Fenyx Rising – A New God takes place in Olympos, the mythical home of the gods in the skies that players might be familiar with if they’ve ever watched Disney’s Hercules. Unfortunately, Zeus and Prometheus don’t play a prominent role in narrating the tale (which is a big shame given how much of a delight they were in the main game), but there’s still plenty of fun to be had simply interacting with the denizens of Olympos – especially since Fenyx is now expected to stand among them as a god. You can expect the same humour from the main game to be present in the narrative, so if you like snarky banter and plenty of witty remarks, you’re in for a treat. Fenyx’s reward for her victory is a place amongst the gods, but hey, this is a video game… it’d never be as simple as just earning that place by beating the big baddie, right? Instead, Fenyx has to explore Olympos and complete new challenges brought forth by the four main gods from the previous game before she can take her seat amongst them. Immortals: Fenyx Rising – A New God carries on directly from the end of the main game, with Typhon vanquished and peace brought to the land once more. I’m about to give away a spoiler (although it’s a pretty obvious one) for Immortals: Fenyx Rising, so look away if you don’t want to read it. It makes for a really fun way to carry on your adventures with Fenyx too, even if the tough difficulty and lack of meaningful combat may put off some players. Immortals: Fenyx Rising – A New God brings with it a continuation of the story and an all-new area for players to explore, with a strong emphasis placed on solving puzzles and completing devilishly difficult platforming challenges. ![]() Still, there was certainly room for more Immortals: Fenyx Rising in my life after that, so I was especially happy when the first DLC content for the game launched last month. Me? I did it all… there’s nothing quite as satisfying as hitting that 100% mark in an open-world adventure. Whilst it had plenty of optional content to complete and collectibles to find, doing so wasn’t imperative to your progress in the game. It didn’t feel as bloated as other open-world adventures either. Sure, it might have borrowed a few ideas along the way (and I’ll NEVER like having to manually find all areas of interest from high points), but it made for a really good time. Whilst some had dismissed it as a Breath of the Wild wannabe, it actually offered a vibrant and enjoyable adventure that brought with it some fantastic puzzle design, a wonderful world to explore, and genuinely deep combat that allowed players to string together all sorts of fascinating abilities. Immortals: Fenyx Rising really impressed me when it released at the back end of last year. ![]() ![]() ![]() As bonus features to the game, cheat modes were introduced, requiring the player to press buttons in a certain order to unlock a hidden "Cheats Menu". ![]() ![]() There are also several other mini games such as a Stunt Course, Hill Climb, a Soccer game with a giant human sized soccer ball, and an "infinite, randomly generated" Desert Track where the player needs to put out ten campfires by driving over them, which Nintendo Power called "one of the coolest concepts ever". Some scholars have suggested that the later Spanish military Orders, like that at the fortress of Calatrava, pledged their loyalty primarily to their Kingdom, in this case Castile, but orders like the Templars or Hospitallers were more independent and not necessarily loyal to any kingdom consistently. But there seems to be a consensus that the knights had obligations to both and an overarching allegiance to the Church, as both were in direct contact with knights (and often royalty were themselves, knights and crusaders). Historians are conflicted as to whether Spanish knights were directed more by royalty (such as the king of Castile or the king of Aragon), or by the Papacy. Ĭhivalry in medieval Spain cannot be understood outside of the context of the military orders of knighthood. ![]() In the context of the Reconquista, and the close proximity of Christian and Muslim populations, the atmosphere for the development of Knightly Orders was ripe, and in the subsequent centuries, chivalry flourished in Spain to a greater extent than in other Christian states. However, the in-statement of chivalric knightly orders and the chivalric ideals and codes of conduct weren’t present on the Iberian Peninsula until almost the second century of the Reconquista. The Reconquista had begun under Alfonso II (791–842) and would last nearly 700 years as Christians attempted to drive Muslims out of the Iberian Peninsula. James himself was known and celebrated in Christianity as ‘the slayer of the Moors’, and the discovery of his body by Christians has been considered an igniting factor of the Reconquista. This was when Frankish knights, who were willing to fight the Muslim invaders of Iberia prior to the Crusades, appeared to protect pilgrims flocking to what was believed to be the tomb of the apostle James in Galicia. Incluso la cultura material tambien refuerza la tesis en el caso, por ejemplo, de los artesanos que creaban objetos emblematicos de la caballeria.Main article: Timeline of the Muslim presence in the Iberian peninsulaĬhivalry, or chivalric codes of manners and proper military engagement, is believed to have arrived in the Iberian Peninsula during the 10th century, in the context of the Reconquista. Material culture from late medieval Spain also supports the article's claim in various ways-Jewish artisans are involved in crafting memorable items of knightly accoutrement and towards the later decades of the fifteenth century there are attempts to incorporate Jews into urban caballeria. Fragments from Inquisition and other archival evidence confirm the taste for chivalric literature amongst Iberian Jews. Late medieval Hebrew MS illuminations show the Hispano-Jewish patrons' taste for the representation of knights and scenes of knightly life. Culturally hybrid representations are also relevant, in specific visual cases such as the iconography of the Arragel Bible-and also its texts-or the texts of the (probably converso) poet Pero Ferruz. Even (neo-) Aramaic mystical texts from thirteenth-century Castile use images and metaphors from chivalric literature. In the case of Hispanic Jews, oral literature, particularly ballads, includes points of contact with Libros de caballeria. It begins by noting the research on chivalric imaginaire amongst Jews in Franco-German areas. The article argues against such generalizations. Abstract : A long standing tradition posits an opposition between the Jews and the ideals and reality of medieval chivalry (i.e., before 1492). ![]() |
